Are oceanic rings and jets statistical equilibrium states ?

چکیده

Oceanic flows have the property to self-organize into large scale coherent structures such as rings (robust vortices) and jets. The concomitant turbulent nature of such flows, and their self-organization property, gives a strong incentive for a statistical mechanics approach. Here we apply equilibrium statistical mechanics theory to a simple ocean model, in order to answer basic questions: What are the shape of the coherent structures ? What is their drift ? When are they unstable ?

Oceanic rings and jets as statistical equilibrium states

Equilibrium statistical mechanics of two-dimensional flows provides an explanation and a prediction for the self-organization of large scale coherent structures. This theory is applied in this paper to the description of oceanic rings and jets, in the framework of a 1.5 layer quasi-geostrophic model. The theory predicts the spontaneous formation of regions where the potential vorticity is homog...

Statistical equilibrium predictions of jets and spots on Jupiter.

An equilibrium statistical theory of coherent structures is applied to midlatitude bands in the northern and southern hemispheres of Jupiter. The theory imposes energy and circulation constraints on the large-scale motion and uses a prior distribution on potential vorticity fluctuations to parameterize the small-scale turbulent eddies. Nonlinearly stable coherent structures are computed by solv...

Effects of on-center impurity on energy levels of low-lying states in concentric double quantum rings

In this paper, the electronic eigenstates and energy spectra of single and two-interacting electrons confined in a concentric double quantum rings with a perpendicular magnetic field in the presence of         on-center donor and acceptor impurities are calculated using the exact diagonalization method. For a single electron case, the binding energy of on-center donor and acceptor impurities ar...

Formation of Jets by Baroclinic Turbulence

Turbulent fluids are frequently observed to spontaneously self-organize into large spatial-scale jets; geophysical examples of this phenomenon include the Jovian banded winds and the earth’s polar-front jet. These relatively steady large-scale jets arise from and are maintained by the smaller spatialand temporalscale turbulence with which they coexist. Frequently these jets are found to be adju...

Bottom-trapped currents as statistical equilibrium states above topographic anomalies

Oceanic geostrophic turbulence is mostly forced at the surface, yet strong bottom-trapped flows are commonly observed along topographic anomalies. Here we consider the case of a freely evolving, initially surface-intensified velocity field above a topographic bump, and show that the self-organization into a bottom-trapped current can result from its turbulent dynamics. Using equilibrium statist...
